Fixed Gear Conversions- $75.......Call 347 436 3945 after noon 7 days/ week If you have an old road bike and want to try riding track, we can convert your bike to fixed gear for as little as $75. Our basic conversion works for any bike with horizontal/diagonal dropouts and a freewheel type rear wheel, and includes new fixed cog and lockring, and the option to chop down your drop bars to make bullhorns. We ll strip off the freewheel cassette, derailleurs, rear brake, and extra chainrings to get rid of any extra weight; and for a straight drivechain we redish the rear wheel and adjust the bottom bracket axle to re-align the cranks. Converting the rear wheel is the crucial part of the operation; we use chemical weld to attach the cog and lockring securely, so that it doesnt come loose when you backpedal to slow down. Redishing involves moving the axle spacers on the rear hub so that the cog lines up perfectly with the chainring, then adding longer spokes on the drive side and shorter ones on the other side, so that the rim is pulled back into the center of the rear triangle, and doesnt rub against the chainstay. Our basic conversion results in a straight drivechain, which is critical for smooth function in a fixed gear, and it is an inexpensive way to start riding track. Although I have never heard of a welded cog failing, with converted rear wheels we always leave the front brake on the bike for extra safety. We also have new Suzue or Quando track and flip-flop wheels available for an extra $50. A flip flop rear wheel can have a fixed gear on one side and a freewheel on the other, so that you simply turn the wheel around to switch between fixed and single speed. We can also upgrade your crankset or other components, or add toeclips, chain tensioners, etc. For tips on choosing a fixed gear bike, check out http://www.recycleabicycle.net We are between workshops right now so we re working from home and we dont have regular hours- please give us a call before you come by to make sure we ll be here. 347 436 3945
